Tour Group rec? Nov. 10th, 2009 @ 06:36 pm
[info]yukitsukihana, posting in [info]nihon
Trying to plan a trip to Japan in the spring (early-mid April), and I'd like to go with a tour group. Could anyone recommend a good group or operator to go with? Airfare and hotels are a must. Meals would be nice, and I'd like a group that centers around temples and onsen. Sakura-viewing would be lovely, too.

In other words, which group is the most trustworthy, and gets me the best deal?

Hi everyone,

I've got a question to ask, and would be very grateful for any responses I receive! I am currently writing a presentation for a Japanese Pop Culture class, in which I focus on food in pop culture. I've focused on Japan's food theme parks, and how food is presented in manga/dramas/ anime, etc. I've also talked about what makes Japanese food "Japanese" and the traditional foods that are still very popular in Japan.

Yet ultimately, my professor wants me to answer the question, "Why do the Japanese care about food as much as they do?" Despite all of my research, I haven't come across anything that helps me answer this question. So, does anyone have any ideas about why the Japanese care about food so much? Thank you so much in advance for any ideas you guys have!!

[MINI ALBUMS - KPOP] IU ▪ iu...am | DNT (Dragon N Tiger) ▪ The Love In My Heart Nov. 11th, 2009 @ 06:33 pm
[info]cloud_honey, posting in [info]bestfiction
AHHHHHH ALMOST FORGOT! DO U LIKEY THE "NEW" LAYOUT, GUYZ? I was tired of seeing f(x) every single time I was going to post and browse through the community so I put Ivy's amusingness here. :D I was also tired of clean backgrounds so... dark is better, isn't it?

"iu...im" is IU's new mini-album. Title track, "Marshmallow", is a very cute and sugary 60s-influenced song with some of French electropop. I didn't like the song when I first heard it yesterday but now I'm really liking it. It's nice even though I still hate her voice (it sounds like SNSD Jessica's, ew). The rest of the mini album is quite nice too but I miss a bit those more Pop Rock-influenced songs, the songs on "iu...im" seem a bit... cute too much.

Just telling you: the files of this mini-album have very mixed bitrate, even though they are all 320kbps. Some seem true high quality but some doesn't. Even two tracks haven't been ripped with LAME. I won't be buying this from Mnet because I don't have enough credits and I don't even like her that much, so understand. And, of course, sorry about that.

DNT (Dragon N Tiger) releases a new single album! "The Love In My Heart" is a... wut... BALLAD. :OOO Thanks for not bringing another Electronica trend song, DNT, much love to you. Why? Because it's a gorgeous R&B ballad, sounds like F.T Island and SHINee altogether! Even the other songs, "I Die..." and "To 18 Girl", are like that. I had a big doubt about their vocal talent when I heard "Crazily Pretty" and some others but now I see that they CAN sing. Such an amazing release to miss.

Hi, I hope you could help me with this one, please:

What is the difference between those two sentences??

車をするなら酒を飲むな。。

車を止めたら、 ライトを消さなければなりません。

When we use "nara" and when "tara" structure?
Also, when we use the "-ba" form?

Thank you a lot!

Hi ya'll, I'm selling some more of my Japanese study aids. Both are in great condition, just want to get rid of them because they are superfluous materials.

- Essential Kanji by PG O'Neill. Perfect condition.
- Japanese Street Slang by Peter Constantine. In really good condition, a few words are underlined.

Both books retail for about $15, selling both for $10 with S&H included, or $5 each, S&H included.

Comment if you're interested, thanks!

Manga Suggestions Nov. 10th, 2009 @ 07:47 pm

I haven't read manga, in a long while. I want to start reading manga again but I'm not even sure what to read.
Manga I like:
Ouran Host Club
Nana
Yotsuba
Azumanga Diaoh
Gals!
Confidential Confessions

I have no specific preference for genre or anything(I'm not really into Gundam type stuff). I just want something with a good story line. Any suggestions are great and appreciated

w00t! Bought (and sold) some kimono this weekend at the Japanese Festival! What is it with me and orange and blue combos? This is something I would never wear in American-style clothing, but I seem to keep ending up with them, even unintentionally.

This weekend, got a cute silk haori that I put one of my beaded himo on, an orange, black, and white obi, and two kimono, one orange and black, one pink with red spots. The orange and black fits perfectly! The pink is the right length, but a little wide. And I just realised that I don't have an obi to go with it, so I may sell it. I also have a pair of authentic miko hakama from the Nara area shrines for sale. ^_^ The thing is, when I got home, I realised how good the white and orange obi looks with my blue kimono... and I have a black and orange juban... ack! Orange and blue again!

I can't wait to dress up and get photos! Too bad I didn't have the orange and black ensemble before Halloween!

Fan History organizational tree: Harry Potter Nov. 10th, 2009 @ 04:23 pm
[info]partly_bouncy, posting in [info]hogwarts
I am crossposting this here because we'd love additional feedback from the Harry Potter community regarding our organizational patterns and because we thought that people might find the patterns themselves interesting in terms of what they say about how people inside and outside the fandom conceptualize the community.

During the past few days, we’ve been working on trying to visualize our organizational patterns on Fan History in order to understand our own patterns, how we conceptualize fandom, to check for organizational consistency, create tools to help users understand our organizational patterns, to identify areas where we lack stub content. This one is about Harry Potter.

Mind map and some commentary )

Our character and pairing structure was taken apart at one point, with articles removed from them. There is the whole question of if we should restore that and put the articles back into the subcategories and restore that. Some like Draco/Hermione have a lot of content that could go in them including stories around the ship, etc. Having that structure existing just makes it easier to navigate and conceptualize in my opinion. If you specifically find that Snape/Harry LiveJournal community, than it helps to have that sorted if we don't have an article list of Snape/Harry LiveJournal communities.

The Harry Potter fandom also seems to be structured around pairings, characters and houses. The community doesn't necessarily have the emphasis on a coherent community identity. Thus, it seems logical to me to structure the fandom more around these articles and rebuild them that way as a history of the fandom would be much more accurate if told from that perspective.

Это три более-менее удобоваримых упражнения.

"LOVE is BEST" is Ai Otsuka's new best-of album. This includes self-selected love songs that she wanted to put into an album, new versions of some ("Amaenbo, "aisu×time") and a brand-new awesome song titled "Is". Basically, this whole album is full of win. Most of my favorite Ai-chan songs are included there and I love the new version of "Amaenbo". WTF at "aisu×time" though, lol.

Oh, well. "Let it Go" is Yuna Ito's new single. First at all: this song is a pop rock number and was produced by Koichi Tabo, former guitarist of Superfly band (yah, she wasn't a solo singer). Since I first heard the song, I thought it was a garbage leftover that Ochi would feel ashamed to sing but it has certainly grown into me. It's a real nice song, she sounds amazing on it and the acoustic feeling it gives is like a breath of fresh air. The b-side, "Happy Days", sounded horrid in the preview but is really nice. It's a mixture of acoustic with songs like "BREEEEEEZIN" and "Urban Mermaid", I really love it. o_o Overall, you may enjoy this single a lot – many other people hated "Happy Days" but I'm not one of them.

CREDIX to [info]akemilove for this, which is her own rip. Thank you babe!

"W-B-X -W-Boiled Extreme-" is Aya Kamiki's new single and also her debut release on avex trax! Features TAKUYA, guitarist of JUDY AND MARY. Title track is the opening theme for tokusatsu series Kamen Rider W (Double) and it's A.W.E.S.O.M.E. So addictive and fresh. Aya never disappoints me, she does real great music. I hope her career on avex carries the same rockish vibe that she had on Giza. Good luck, dear!

Hello I'm new studying Japanese in Japan. Just needed a question answered
if I wanted to use

TAME NI (for) how would it be used?

e.g. I am studying for exam?
or I need this for...

and also (if) tense can I use moshi (+tara) for anything? Which other ifs do I need to consider.

Also I find it hard to say something like

i didn't intend to..

e.g. I didn't intend to lie or I didn't intend to say that... etc.
